Nature lover Peter Berg grew up in the Ahr valley, in the Eifel region. Nevertheless, the Rhinelander made a few detours before finding his true vocation. After gaining his intermediate diploma in civil engineering, which he completed while working in construction, he chose a different path. In 1986, he realised horticulture and landscape gardening was his passion. During his training, he gained experience in almost all branches of horticulture. In 2000, he set up his own company, along with business partner Susanne Förster, so that he could pursue his own ideas.
His projects receive a lot of media attention, as well as interest from across the gardening industry. His most recent success was taking first place in the TOP 100 planners ranking in the “Gardens of the Year” 2024.
Peter Berg also lives out his love of nature and his homeland in his leisure time. For relaxation he rides a mountain bike or goes cross-country skiing in the Eifel region. His private hillside garden in Sinzig, on the site of an old vineyard, is his lifelong field of experimentation.
With a passion for something better
In 2021, the Ahr valley experienced its worst flooding in more than 100 years. Afterwards, it was time to get to work. The aim was not just to rebuild the flooded garden, but to create something better. What had been learned in theory during our dry-stone walling workshop, was put into practice.

The author
A few years ago, a valued client suggested to Peter Berg that he write a book, something he could not previously have imagined doing. But the idea sprouted and finally bloomed. It was the ideal opportunity to present his view of what good garden design means.
In 2010, Peter Berg published his first book. „Moderne Gartenarchitektur“
(Modern Garden Architecture) is based on international projects and shows the strong affinity he had at the time to formal, rather than minimalist, design. He was able to fill a gap in the garden literature genre, but garden design remained secondary to the architecture.
One of the most important elements in Peter Berg’s gardens is dealt with in his book „Naturstein im Garten“ (Natural Stone in the Garden), published in 2012. The endless possibilities for using natural stone, in all its facets, is showcased here in Peter Berg’s own impressive designs, as well as those of international colleagues.
The architecture and garden must come together, form a unity, and exist on an equal footing. This was Peter Berg’s vision, which resulted in his next book, „Moderne Gartenkonzepte – Gartengestaltung passend zur Architektur“ (Modern Garden Concepts – Garden Design that Complements the Architecture), published in 2015.
In the years since founding GartenLandschaft, Peter Berg has continued to develop and evolve his garden design style and philosophical approach to analysing nature, aesthetics and design. In his book published in 2018, “Peter Berg Gartendesign – Natur. Ästhetik. Design. (Peter Berg Garden Design – Nature. Aesthetics. Design), he shares his views, illustrating them exclusively with his own designs of private, corporate and show gardens. Take a closer look at the books >
The new book „Bergstyle – inspired by Pückler“ is going to be published by Prestel Verlag in September 2024. In the tradition of the garden visionary Count Pückler (1785–1871), creator of the world-famous parks in Muskau and Branitz, Peter Berg shows how architecture, landscape and garden can visually unite to form a sustainable and future-oriented whole.
