Using stone to design a garden on a slope

Honest, natural and sustainable materials play a big part in our work. Natural stone and high-quality plants are the fundamental elements in our gardens. There are endless uses for natural stone, it lasts for decades and becomes more and more valuable over the years, which is what makes it so special. We personally select the stones we use from reputable quarries. Thanks to his many years of working with this material, Peter Berg has built strong relationships with companies that produce the highest quality natural stones.

Good garden design starts with a good structure. Natural stone is ideal for creating different levels and surfaces, either by building dry stone walls or placing rocks in a particular way. The Japanese masters have perfected the art of free-standing stone placement, which we have further developed for use on a slope. Just like the individual instruments in an orchestra, each stone has a specific role to play, and they must be placed together to form a harmonious ensemble, says Peter Berg. A very beautiful addition, which complements free-standing stones, is the dry-stone wall, which is made without cement or mortar. This traditional craft is equally at home in modern architecture as it is in mature gardens. We recommend using greywacke or slate in the construction.
